๐งฌ Antibiotics disrupt the gut microbiome, but what happens to phagesโthe viruses that infect bacteria?
This study followed 22 healthy individuals 2 weeks before and up to 6 months after a 3-day course of third-generation cephalosporins.

๐๐๐ฆ๐บ ๐ง๐ช๐ฏ๐ฅ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ๐ด:
โ๏ธGut phages rarely carry antibiotic resistance genes.
โ๏ธMost are temperate phages, including many phage-plasmids.
โ๏ธPhage populations remain highly individual-specific, even after treatment.
However: just one day after antibiotics, phage diversity drops by 20% ๐, with blooms of a few predominantly virulent phages. This diversity was able to recover afterwards.
โ๏ธSome of these phages may support bacterial recovery through โkill-the-winnerโ dynamics. They target the bacteria that became dominant following antibiotic treatment.
